The Nick-and-Jessica Phenomenon Explained

Ok, here's my theory. I believe that Nick and Jessica didn't work out because Jessica was more successful than her male counterpart. Marriages like that never work out - especially since they were competitors at one point in the pop music industry.

In psych, we learned that men are generally uncomfortable around more successful women. Not that they don't like smart women (some don't!), they just feel insecure about their masculine role when around women who are comfortable with supporting themselves.

So they started to date when they were both in the same boat - both successful pop artists. But then, Jessica decides she wants to pursue acting as well and with her new toned body and all, she begins to get noticed and her career skyrockets. All the while, Nick is at home, brooding over his failing career and wallowing in his wife's huge shadow of success. Although he's been quoted as saying, "It's not just her success, it's OUR success as a couple," the truth of the matter is, his bruised ego can only take so much!

So the lesson here is? If you're planning on being a successful woman, make sure you find a man who's comfortable with playing house-husband or is not afraid to be a man in a woman's shadow. Case in point, society views men who are less successful as gold-diggers, free-loaders and perhaps a bit lacking in the ambition department. So unless your man is Kevin Federline, he won't be comfortable with that kind of reputation.

It sucks that a woman who is smart and capable will be left sooner than a woman who is a bit dim in the upper cranial region. Is it so that in every relationship there has to be one less ambitious person for it to work? Can two ambitious people ever work out if they're always competing to be the provider? hmm...

  • smart and capable--jessica simpson?
i dunno about that Mans. i mean jessica had one kinda good movie but she aint that popular (talked about but not 'popular')...in fact i think she was more popular during the run of their television show because of her antics.

i actually think this is a great publicity stunt for BOTH of their careers to keep people talking about them. but i think it failed because they really aren't that compatable...

why? some may fall through the cracks but there are tons of powerhouse couples that work wonders together and apart....and there are tonsss of couples where one outshines the other.

  • i guess my argument is that we grow up with certain gender roles in our mind.. woman does this and man does that...and sometimes when those roles are reversed or "adjusted," people don't know how to cope.

hahaha.. I don't mean to say that JS is smart or capable (I agree with you on that one), but she is more successful than her male counterpart. And I think that fact alone tampered with their specified gender roles.

I've seen "powerhouse" couples stay together...and sometimes it's because they're able to sort out these "roles" beforehand and be successful at being together - but mind you, I believe this is very rare.

For educated women find it very difficult to be submissive - call it the curse of an education - and so, as my psych books pointed out in numerous case studies...the more education you obtain, the chances of finding someone you can relate to on an intimate level decrease. It's so sad, really...I relate education to success but this may not always be the path to a success.

It's gotta be hard because as a woman, you want to help provide for your family...because you've spent 5 freakin years in school to get a decent-paying job...at the same time, you want a big strong man who can take care of you and do all the manly things around the house. This confuses men...and therefore, we have our dilemma.

I don't know where I'm going with this - I should have just written another blog all together!
